Srinagar, Mar 28 (KNO): Medical experts say there are numerous health benefits associated with fasting during the month of Ramadan. Doctors who spoke to the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO) said that fasting contributes to weight loss, improves blood sugar control, and reduces inflammation. Dr Fayaz Ahmad Bhat, Assistant Professor in the Department of General Medicine at SKIMS Soura, said that fasting instills discipline and patience while also decreasing the risk of developing metabolic disorders such as diabetes, hypertension, and fatty liver. He mentioned recent studies that indicate a lower incidence of neurological diseases and cancer among individuals who fast. Fasting promotes the regeneration of stem cells, which contribute to tissue and organ formation in the body, he said. "Fasting helps in promoting blood sugar control, fighting inflammation, and may enhance heart health by improving blood pressure, triglycerides, and cholesterol levels," Dr Bhat said, adding that fasting aids in weight loss by limiting calorie intake and boosting metabolism. Dr Fayaz said there are many benefits of fasting that prevent cancer and increase the effectiveness of chemotherapy. Similarly, Dr Shahnawaz said that fasting contributes to weight loss, particularly among men, and helps in reducing LDL (low-density lipoprotein) cholesterol, often referred to as "bad" cholesterol. “Fasting plays a crucial role in decreasing chronic inflammation, which is associated with the development of chronic conditions such as heart disease, cancer, and rheumatoid arthritis,” he said. The doctor said that fasting has been associated with improved brain function and increased growth hormone secretion, which is essential for metabolism, weight loss and muscle strength. Medical experts said there are multifaceted health benefits of fasting, including weight loss, improved insulin sensitivity, detoxification, reduced cholesterol levels, and enhanced leptin receptivity, contributing to overall youthfulness and well-being— (KNO)
